Radio Minmay's Picks: Galaxy Express 999

Good evening Johnnies.

I've been on an old anime kick lately, Matsumoto in particular. I'm sure I have a majority of his work right now...currently I'm watching Galaxy Express 999 and I'm 46/113 done. It seems like a daunting task, but I highly recommend this series for fans of old anime (if you haven't watched it already), fans of Kino no Tabi (Sig'sawa cited GE999 as his source of inspiration for the novels), and the young aspiring otaku (this series is a classic).

The series is about an orphan, Tetsuro Hoshino, who hopes to travel to the Andromeda Galaxy on the Galaxy Express 999 to gain an immortal android body as a promise to his slain mother. He is given a rail pass to the 999 by the mysterious Maetel --who has an eerie resemblance to Tetsuro's late mother -- in exchange for his companionship on the train. Most of the body of the series are the stops they take along the long journey from Earth to Andromeda, staying for the equivalent of a day's time in each location.

As of right now, all 113 episodes are streaming at Anime News Network. I say take advantage of this opportunity to watch this series because it's usually up on the site for six months before it's replaced (however this is the second time I've seen it on the site, it was taken off in March this year and put back in July)

For those who are not up to the task and strapped for time (I don't blame you), I do recommend the movie version, which is beautifully animated, has a fantastic soundtrack and has large cameos by Harlock, Tochiro and Emeraldas, some of Matsumoto's famous characters. The movie version has a sequel, Adieu Galaxy Express 999, which I still need to watch at this moment before I can recommend it.

Anyone that wants to know more about Matsumoto's works, check out Codi's Leiji Matsumoto panel at Sugoicon 2010.
