Good evening Johnnies!
Lately I've been bothered by younger anime fans. I may still be considered young by some people, but in the 21.5 years I've been alive, there have been plenty of good anime created and released. What bothers me is that younger fans are considering even the stuff released in the 2000s old, and also having no interest in much older series...not even series from the late 80's. I'd like to think that Speedwagon Foundation could help encourage the viewing of older anime...we cover a lot of anime from 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
I mean, you kiddies like Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann, right? Some mecha shows from the 70s should be right up your ally.
I am not saying anime nowadays is terrible. There's some pretty good series coming out in the recent decade, and there have been terrible (campy, cheesy, whathaveyou) series and movies in past decades. But still, there's a lot of older anime to watch and become a fan of. Maybe the kiddies don't know what to watch, maybe they don't know what is good.
Advice to the kiddies, there's a whole internet out there to explore, do some research on anime on Wikipedia and Anime News Network. Find out about influential series, series in the same genre as your favorites --your favorite series that came out recently may have been heavily influenced by an older work. At conventions, check out panels about older franchises or genre overviews and ask the panelists their favorites. YOU WILL FIND SOMETHING FUN TO WATCH, I'M PRETTY SURE YOU WILL.
Now, on the topic of what is considered old? 10 years may seem long from a series release date, but it is not old. It shouldn't be called old yet. It will be eventually. Early 2000s, we were getting into digitalized anime and plenty of DVD releases. I say stuff from 1990-1995 should be considered a little aged now. A little bit. I consider a lot of stuff from the 1980s old only because a lot of them came out before I was born (Spring 1989), which is a pretty okay gauge for calling something old.
So kiddies, try out the "older than old" anime and see what you think.
